In the 1840s, this would have felt radical. It still does. A natural history bird study, drawn with the patience of a museum plate, then handed a crown of roses, daisies and little purple wildflowers. On the wall it does something a straight animal picture can’t: it makes people smile before they work out why. The warm off-white background keeps it light, so it lifts a nursery, a child’s room or a dim hallway without shouting. Hang it at eye level on a chalky pale wall, or above a cot or low chest of drawers. Pair it with cane, pale wood and soft pink or cream linen.
