In the 1970s, this would have felt radical. It still does. Airbrushed light, grain and pure colour on a black ground, with no image to read and nothing to explain. Hung up, it does the job a lamp usually does: the wall stops being flat and starts glowing. It suits a wall that has been left empty for too long, above a sofa, a sideboard or a desk, and it holds its own on a dark painted wall. Keep the surrounding furnishings simple and hard: chrome, glass, black metal, charcoal or grey seating, one pink or purple cushion at most. Don’t crowd it with framed photos, botanical prints or anything patterned, and don’t push it into a corner. On premium fine-art paper the grain stays crisp and the colour shifts read smoothly.

The black frame matters first; it tells the living room you’re serious. Without that hard edge the colour drifts; with it, the glow reads as a deliberate piece rather than a splash of light on the wall. Hung up, the room warms and lifts at once – pink and yellow bounce into a flat white wall, and a plain sofa suddenly looks styled. It works best on a clear wall above a low sideboard, between two windows, or on the wall behind a desk where you see it all day. Keep the furnishings quiet: smooth plaster, pale wood, chrome, one dark ceramic. Don’t crowd it with other colourful prints or busy pattern – it needs empty wall on both sides to do its job. On paper the grain stays fine and the colour shifts look soft.
