Against plaster, the mustard yellow reads less sweet, more deliberate. The whole wall warms up, and the room stops feeling like it is waiting for something to happen. Colour does the work here: warm yellow, orange, green and soft pink pull against each other so a plain wall suddenly has depth. Hang it in a living room above a low sofa or sideboard, or on a dining room wall where people sit and talk for hours. Give it room on either side. Pair it with mid-century wood, cane, mustard or rust seating and simple stoneware. Do not crowd it with other strong colour pieces or busy patterned wallpaper, and skip cool grey-blue schemes that fight the yellow.
