We like seascapes best when they come with a little abrasion. Constable’s Hove Beach isn’t the tidy postcard version of the coast it’s a windy dusk, a low sun burning through cloud, and small figures picking their way along the sand. Hung in a living room or bedroom, it slows the space down. The sandy beiges and warm greys settle a room without flattening it, and the loose brushwork gives painted walls and plain upholstery something to react to. It works above a sofa, a bed, or a low sideboard where the horizon can sit around eye level. Best on a chalky off-white, soft grey-green or warm clay wall. Avoid pairing with bright turquoise coastal decor the mood is quieter than that.
