Gallery Edition – Zonderling boeket by Frits van den Berghe – 44×56 Interior Architectural Study

Curatorial Narrative Frits van den Berghe’s “Zonderling boeket” of 1930 occupies a pivotal position within the trajectory of European avant-garde art. At this juncture, artists were increasingly eschewing representational techniques in favor of more expressive modes of depiction. Van den Berghe’s impasto brushwork and bold palette of reds, greens, yellows, pinks, and browns instantiate the artist’s allegiance to an abstract expressionist idiom.As we consider “Zonderling boeket” at its intended scale, we find that its chromatic structure assumes a robust presence. The spatial rhythm established by the dense cluster of brushstrokes generates a sense of visual tension, which is subsequently tempered by the atmospheric weight imparted by the artist’s judicious application of impasto texture.
